In the feedback we did receive last year, the one comment that was most common was a desire for a more "private" conversation with instructors than our arena formats offers. We recognize that the arena format offers some other benefits that staying in classrooms does not offer. We'd like to try to get the best of both worlds.
At times when our schedule is usually slower, I'd like for our conferencing to be done in the classrooms, as opposed to the arena. As parents contact you about visiting, you might suggest to them these different formats to meet their needs. We will use some students to act as guides to help parents find their way around the school and into the classrooms they seek.
Please take time to examine the schedule to see when we will be in arena and when you will be in classrooms. After conferences are over, please feel free to send me your feedback about this approach.

1. OPEN HOUSE, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 at 6:30:
From 6:30 - 8:00 on Thursday we will be having an Open House for our
parents and community. The format will be brief bells schedule that allows the
parents to move from period to period. This will allow them to meet each
teacher in their student's schedule. We will kick off in the gym at 6:30.
2. EARLY RELEASE AGENDA: SEPTEMBER 21:
We will be using our Early Release bell schedule for classes on Wednesday,
September 21.
Once we return from lunch all OHS staff will
convene in the Commons at 12:30.
12:30 Blood Borne Pathogens Training
1:00 Data Team/Departmental Break outs sessions
3:00 Flu Shots are available
3. SUPER SPREAD SHEET TRAINING:
There will be a Super Spread Sheet training on
Wednesday 6:30 in Room 440.
Thursday 6:30 in Room 440.
Friday 6:30 in Room 440.
4. ANNUAL GOALS:
Starting next week, supervisors will begin to schedule meetings for your
annual goal setting. Early next week an agenda will be sent to you that will
outline the contents of those meetings. Please review the agenda prior to
meeting with your supervisors.
5. VISION DOCUMENT:
The Site Council has been working on a document that captures the OHS
vision for school improvement. You can access this document on VIBE. Take a
look at it and offer your feedback.
In the end, we want this document to spell out what it takes for each set
of stakeholders to insure that we are meeting the needs of our students.
6. COPIER NUMBERS:
Last year I mentioned that I was going to get our copier set up to track
copier usage. I have finally been able to get staff codes assigned, so that
each person will have their own code. This will enable us to see which
departments have the greatest copier demand.
Last year we made 1.2 million copies and ran out of our paper allocation by
semester. I have not yet begun to track our paper usage, but this will help
inform our use of resources, so that we can allocate things accordingly.

The 2011-12 Test Specifications and Blueprints for OAKS Mathematics, Reading, Science, and Social Sciences are currently available at http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/page/?id=496. These documents contain sample items, achievement level descriptors and achievement standards, as well as most everything you might want to know about the Oregon Content Standards and the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills.
Teachers and district staff use the Test Specifications and Blueprints in a variety of ways.- Content coverage and weighting on the state assessments (Test Blueprints, Content Coverage and Weighting).
- Augment lesson plans with allowable resources so that students are prepared to use these resources – periodic table, calculators, writing organizer – during the state assessment (Appendices).
- Prepare students for testing (Item Maps including such as (by Content Standard) Sample Items, Explanations, Assessable Academic Vocabulary, Boundaries of Assessable Content, and Connections from Previous Grades).

This Wednesday at 6:00 we'll be hosting the ASPIRE training for community mentors. It would be great to have as many staff there as possible just to show support for the program. We'll be meeting in the library for a web-ex training on how to be an effective mentor as part of the ASPIRE program. To be clear, this training is designed for community mentors, but if staff want to come, that would be great.

Reminder: Principals and other administrators from the other schools in the district will be here from 9:00-11:30 today and we'll be visiting classrooms. If you see a herd of administrators headed your way, no need to head for the exits, we're just doing instructional rounds.

Please remember today is the deadline for submitting your size for staff shirts. There are shirts to try on in the staff room, please use the box and check-sheet. There are 18 staff who still need to submit their sizes. |

In the interest of building local capacity and expertise, I'd like to offer
a few after-school training opportunities focused on Excel and working with
student data. These opportunities are voluntary, but I really encourage you to
attend at least one that's at your level. I've scheduling them in sequential
order from most basic to most advanced. Please choose one that fits your needs;
with the more advanced trainings (201 & 301), I'd like to skip the 101 stuff
and go right into advanced use. If you can't make one of these; I'll repeat in a week or so.

Tuesday, Sept. 6, we'll meet with students for a 30-minute AM assembly to review academic and behavioral expectations and requirements. We'll share some data about their hard work last year and talk about how we'll be successful in the coming year.
